The Round Room…

I have had exactly three supernatural experiences in my life. All impacted me profoundly. I became an instant believer in the unexplained. My first “visit” was from a loved one who had passed. I was twenty-three and he had died from an aneurism. I was traumatized and started experiencing panic attacks and night terrors on a regular basis. It was during this time, I learned how to control and focus my breath.

He visited me one night, dressed and absorbed in an all white light, he stared at me intimately, never speaking a word. He held my hand and kissed my heart. I could feel the warmth of the light surrounding him. I closed my eyes and when I opened them again, he was gone.

The next two “visits” I had were by the same lady. I was living in St. Paul, Minnesota in an old building that had been built in the 1800’s. It was said to have been an old girls dormitory that was converted into apartments. I remember waking as I felt the distinct impression of someone sitting beside me on the bed and I felt long, cold, but feminine fingers gently touch my shoulder and shake me. It did not feel malicious. The second time she visited me, I was just laying down and as I reached to turn out the lamp, I saw her float down my hallway carrying a brass altar candle. She was dressed in all black covered head to toe and was wearing long sleeves. She had a high button collar.

I have always been intrigued by the supernatural; the unknown. And, we all know I’m like a junkie for the prospect of adventure. A thrill seeker. So, when I stumbled across an article on the ‘Round Room,’ I started doing my research. The Round Room is located in Grass Valley, CA but is in a fairly remote area. I had to make two trips out to the site before I was able to find the location.

Legend says that Dr. Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, would take followers to that point to perform rituals, séances, and sacrifices. It was reported that in the 60’s there would be covens of white robes. It is also rumored that many unsolved murders occurred there but no bodies were ever found; just their blood. It is also said that Dr. LaVey owned a home near the Round Room and that it had a bleeding tree.

According to legend, Dr. LaVey was a dark soul that dabbled in the macabre. He favored dark literature and had worked at many circuses and carnivals. He was even said to have had an affair with Marilyn Monroe. As time went on, he became more eclipsed by the darkness and absorbed himself in the writings of Aleister Crowley. During this time, he also majored in criminology. It is said that Dr. LaVey owned a Nubian Lion.

Having done my research, I was ready to embrace my adventure. As I stated earlier, it took me two tries to find the exact location. Driving there, I felt I must be close as I came across many stone-stacked totems. I passed an old cage that apparently once traveled with a circus caravan; the fortress that once held Dr. LaVey’s lion? My first time out, I parked by the electrical plant. As I stepped out of my car, I instantly felt a dark presence all around me, tugging (or clawing) at my heart. My chest felt heavy. I decided to hike into the remote, untouched land to see what I could find. I came across strewn clothing, wood piles, tarnished pictures that appeared to have been burned, and figurines hanging in the trees. It all felt very ‘Blair Witch.’ Before long, the sweltering heat and dark presence began weighing heavily on me. I felt suffocated and started back toward my car. I did not find the Round Room, but I was done with my adventure.

A few weeks later, I decided to make a second attempt. It was as though I were led to the exact spot just a little further down past the electrical plant. I approached the Round Room in awe. I started recording instantly. There were many quartz crystals circling the spherical fortress, made of cement, and covered in satanic graffiti. The hollowed center had a large pentagram painted on the floor. In the center was what appeared to be a burned out bon fire and remnants of candles, burned to the wick.

There was no ceiling, just open air. And yet, the acoustics in this place were amazing. I continued scouting the area, walking further down the property, past the Round Room. I found an overlook that was breath taking as the fog seemed to lull in the valley and the peaks of the mountains stood tall and proud. I found what appeared to have been the foundation of a house that had been burned to the ground. Was the torching done with a cleansing purpose in mind? It was rumored that near here, a neighbors dog had been surgically eviscerated.

After we left, my feelings were torn. I had a sort of ugly feeling in my soul but also found gratitude that I had found the location and that I got to see and experience this place first hand. Though I know I will most likely never visit this place again, I enjoyed my “adventure.”
